Who wrote the diary? That is a question that has been plaguing us, so
we have decided to post a list of possible authors and walk you through our
process in narrowing down the field.

We begin by making a list of all the men who enlisted in Company F
on September 4, 1862. The author's entry for that date states:
Thursday 4
Visitors came from Augusta
Seth Ball
Hen Warthey and others was mustered in to service by Capton
Drake of the regular army.

This list contains the names of 101 men who could potentially
be the author of this diary.

Next we have taken that list and removed all the men the author
mentions in the diary. If he mentions someone, then that
person would not be the author.

Those men have been removed from the list of potential authors.

There are now 77 men on the list who could potentially be the
author of the diary.

The next step was to remove all those men who either died or were
discharged due to disability during the time the diary was being
written.

Those men have been removed from the list of potential authors,

The list has now been narrowed down to 69 men who could
potentially be the author of the diary.

The next step is to eliminate all those men who are not married
during that timeframe since the author of the diary is married.

Removing men who are not married narrows the list down even more.

As you can tell, we are still in the process of narrowing down the
list of men who could be the author of the diary. Future steps
will include looking at whether these men have children (the author
has children) and whether or not the men left on the list have
fathers who are still living (the author writes to his father).
