AUGUSTA TOWNSHIP MAN KILLED IN AUTO MISHAP
Joseph E. Snively, 65, of Augusta
Twp., was killed instantly Sunday night when he was struck by a
Carrollton police cruiser while walking north on Rt. 9 at the
fairgrounds. The police car was driven by Robert H. Robson, 52, of
Carrollton.
Sheriff Richard Beamer, who investigated the accident, stated that
Robson was driving north at about 50 miles per hour in pursuit of a
stop sign violater when the accident occurred. Mr. Snively
died of a fractured skull and multiple fractures of the right leg.
Joseph E. Snively was born June 23, 1890, in Harrison Twp., the son
of the late John L. and Frances Fletcher Snively and had spent his
entire life in this community. He was well known throughout the
county and adjoining areas as a reputable auctioneer and livestock
dealer. He served as patrolman at the race track crossing gate at
the Carroll Co. Fair for many years.
A veteran of World War I, he went with the group leaving Carrollton
on April 29, 1918 for Camp Sherman, Chillicothe, Ohio. He was a
member of Harsh Reformed Church and Carrollton American Legion
Post. His wife, Ella, died four years ago.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lester Lucas and one
granddaughter, Vicki, of the home; two brothers, Tom of Augusta and
Jack Snively of Carrollton; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Thomas Kinsey of
Augusta and two stepsons, Paul Wirebaugh of Glassport, Pa. and
George Wirebaugh of Florida and nine stepgrandchildren.
Services
were conducted Wednesday afternoon in the Sweeney Funeral Home with
the Rev. Rollin Reiss officiating. Burial was in Augusta Cemetery.
