County Auditor Owen, 66, Dies
C. Jay Owen, 66, Carroll County auditor the past
seven years, died Sunday evening in his home at 243 2nd St. NE,
Carrollton, after a lingering illness.
He formerly had been a potter at the old Owen China Co. and at the
former Cronin China Co., both of Minerva, and had owned and operated
a poultry farm near Augusta.
Mr. Owen was a member and elder of Augusta Christian Church and a
member of Augusta Lodge F&AM and Minerva chapter of Royal Arch
Masons of Carrollton.
A Republican, Mr. Owen became county auditor Nov. 1, 1956, when he
was appointed to fill the unexpired term of F. D. Leatherman, who
resigned. In succeeding years he was elected to the office.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Loa Watson Owen; one son, Albert of
Augusta, county sanitarian; two daughters, Mrs. Roland Dorr and Mrs.
Robert Myers, both of Kensington; one brother, Seth of Augusta, and
12 grandchildren.
Services were Wednesday at Augusta Christian Church with Rev. Edward
Hanna and Rev. L. E. Barnett officiating. Burial was in
Augusta cemetery. The Sweeney Funeral Home of Carrollton was
in charge of arrangements.
