Biochemist Who Lost Mice Is Going West

BROOKSIDE, N.J. -- (AP) -- Dr. George H. Mangun, who gave away 3,000 mice when his garage-laboratory was closed by local officials, is on his way to Tempe, Ariz.

Mangun, a biochemist, left with his family Friday for a teaching and research job at Arizona State College.

He had been experimenting on pain-killing drugs here when Mendham Township ruled that his research violated zoning laws.  Mangun then distributed his mice among neighborhood children.

His wife, Libby, and their children, Ronnie, 4, Debbie, 2, and Lloyd, 7 months, were sorry to leave friends.

But Mangun looked forward to his new research position.

"They encourage progress in Arizona, not hinder it," he said.
