Scientist Returns For Montana Visit
BOZEMAN (U.P.) -- Dr. George Mangun, director
of research for Warner-Chilcott, producer of pharmaceutical
supplies, returned to Montana in somewhat different fashion then the
first time he came to the state in 1928.
In 1928, Mangun, then 17, rode the rods to Billings. He
hopped what he thought was a southbound freight and found himself in
Livingston. Lloyd and Mary Shellhamer, now of Bozeman, gave
him work on their ranch at Clyde Park and encouraged him to attend
Clyde Park High School.
He won a high school physics scholarship contest and enrolled at
Montana State College.
Upon graduation he did graduate work at Western Reserve University
in Cleveland, and received a doctorate in biochemistry in 1938.
He has been director of research at Warner-Chilcott since 1952.
Research under his direction has included development of the
hormone, releasin, also a new tranquilizer known as pacatal and
development of diagnostic regents used to verify accuracy of certain
clinical methods.
Mangun has gained nationwide recognition for his work in
research developments.
