From the Files of Mary Kinsey Turnipseed, Long-time Augusta Reporter for the Carrollton and Minerva papers On Monday, April 27th, Mr. George W.
Pottorf, a well-to-do farmer residing about two miles south of Augusta, this
county, while unloading a barrel of salt which he had that purchased,
received an injury, which resulted in the breaking of his left femur, six
inches above the knee joint. An alarm was raised by his wife, who was
unable to carry her husband into the house and school children close by were
requested to go for neighbors to assist.
Walter J. Manfull, aged twelve years last November, son of
B. F. and
Nancy DeFord Manfull, went with the other school children to the scene,
thence to Mess.Geo and Jason Kennedys to secure their aid. On his arrival
there, both of the Mr. Kenedys were at the lower farm, near Mr. Wathey's, a
mile or more away. Mrs. Kennedy then placed Walter on a horse to finish the
errand; and he soon was flying down the road. Miss Ollie Carr noticed him
pass Mr. Wathey's house, and in a few moments the horse returned without the
rider. She ran down the road in the direction she had seen Walter riding,
and found him lying unconscious in the center of the road. No one had seen
the fall. They carried him into Mr. Wathey's house, where he expired in a
short time without regaining consciousness. |
